Not sure who all celebrates this tradition, but here in the Rhine Valley the Funken is happening. Most of the towns each have their own Funken celebration. The concept is burning away the witches of winter. They stack all the old Christmas trees into a tower, put a witchlike figurine on top and light it on fire. Music, food and fireworks complete the party. We went to one last weekend in Austria with friends.

True fact, since last weekend almost all the snow has melted in our backyard. I just might be a believer. :) Another interesting tradition we have experienced over here, I wonder what the Swiss think about Groundhog Day? - C
